Choose a bolster dog bed if your dog regularly leans against an edge or rests their head on a cushion. Choose a flat mattress if they stretch out, change position frequently or need an unobstructed route on and off the bed. A low-front bolster can offer a useful middle option.
The shape is only part of the decision. A roomy flat bed with inadequate filling can be less useful than a well-sized bolster, while a luxurious bolster may leave surprisingly little sleeping space inside its raised edges.

Watch several naps before measuring
Look at your dog’s relaxed sleeping positions over a few days. Do they curl tightly in the morning but lie on their side later? Do they use a sofa arm as a headrest or push cushions away? Note the positions rather than judging from one photograph of a curled-up dog.

Understand what the bolster takes away
As a hypothetical example, a bed advertised as 100cm wide could have substantial side cushions that leave far less than 100cm for the dog. Another mattress with a smaller external footprint may offer more uninterrupted lying space. Ask for the internal dimensions if the listing only gives overall size.
Also check whether the bolster is separate from the base. Removable side cushions make some covers easier to wash, but they add pieces to reassemble. Sewn-in filling may be simpler until the entire bulky bed needs laundering. An opening in the front helps access only if it stays open when the dog steps through.
Compare filling independently of shape
Both bolster beds and flat mattresses can use foam or loose filling. “Orthopaedic” is not a precise promise that a particular bed will treat arthritis. For a dog with discomfort or mobility problems, ask the veterinary team about appropriate support and access, then examine how the mattress behaves under the dog’s weight.

Make washing part of the comparison
Ask what happens after a muddy nap or an accident. Can the cover go into your machine? Does an inner liner protect the filling? Are the liner’s seams and zip covered? A water-resistant outer fabric is not automatically a waterproof inner barrier.
For a bolster, check the corners and seams where hair collects. For a mattress, check whether the cover can be removed without bending or tearing the foam. Replacement covers can be useful when the main bed is otherwise sound. Calculate the cost of the bed plus a spare only if you will actually use one.

Place it where your dog already feels comfortable, away from draughts and busy walkways. Keep another familiar resting place available. A dog who ignores a bed beside a noisy appliance may dislike the location rather than the mattress.
Watch entry, settling and getting up over several days. If your dog repeatedly hangs half their body over the edge, struggles to turn or avoids a high side, reconsider the fit. The most useful bed is the one that accommodates their ordinary sleep without making them negotiate its design.
